Built next to the Galleries of Justice Nottingham, The Old Police Station sits on ancient lands. After months of research we have uncovered the secrets of this very haunted location and now open its doors for you to investigate!
In the 1600s on this site stood the grand Castle Inn, this inn was probably a typical mediaeval hostelry built round a great yard and having galleries which formed passages by which the bedrooms could be reached.
A curious story is known of this inn which shows the sordid and strange incidents that would occur at these ancient pubs. When King Charles came to Nottingham to raise his standard at the commencement of the great war between the King and the Parliament in 1642, Prince Rupert, his dashing cavalry leader, quartered himself at this Castle Inn. While he stayed there he challenged a teetotal waiter to drink a glass of wine to guard against poisoning. When the waiter disapproved, the Prince's suspicions were immediately aroused, and drawing his sword he made a rush at the unfortunate man, who only escaped instant death by vaulting over the banisters of the gallery outside the room into the great yard below. The landlord came rushing up and succeeded in pacifying Prince Rupert by explaining to him that the man meant no disrespect or harm to the prince, but that he was a strict teetotaler.
This inn disappears a hundred years later, although there are references to its useage as a meeting place for dignatories. After 1744 for the land upon which it stood was left open as a garden or vista, from which a magnificent view over the whole of the Leicestershire hills could be obtained..
In 1833 the land was purchased by the County Justices and in 1847 the new County Police Station was built as it was ideally situated next to the main courts and County Gaol and so easy to transfer prisoners before trial.
The Edwardian Police Station and its cells were in use for over a 140 years, and many criminals have stayed within its cells. It is said that some of these criminals still linger to this day, and many of the museum’s staff refuse to stay in the police by themselves.
After a fire at the turn of the 20th Century, the building was rebuilt in 1905 and the newer Edwardian police station remained in working order until it was closed in 1985.
