IN THE SHADOW OF THE WITCH Back to Ghost Hunts
*
Situated on a dramatic and isolated crag above the river Ribble, Clitheroe looks every inch the classic haunted ruin. Dating to at least 1186 when Robert de Lacy is thought to have had commissioned an imposing structure to rule over the local population, the castle also once belonged to the Crown.

The heart of de Lacy’s original Norman castle, the keep, still stands to this day, although it was badly damaged during the civil war whilst under siege by Oliver Cromwell’s forces and not repaired until the 1800s. Also still standing are additions and renovations from the 16th and 18th centuries.

One local story has it that the devil was given such trouble by the folk of Clitheroe that he threw a huge stone at the castle, but it bounced off and shattered to create the nearby “Devil’s Apronful”, which is in truth an ancient burial chamber.  Within sight of the castle is also Pendle Hill, home of some of the country’s most notorious witches.

One of the most famous hauntings at the castle is the White Lady; her identity is a mystery, but many have seen her roaming the ruined corridors and grounds. Accompanied tonight by one of our top psychic mediums, perhaps you can help us discover who she was in life and why she still haunts the castle.

A number of other apparitions have been seen by startled visitors, including the figure of a maid seemingly caught deep in sadness, and even a male, female and child ghost all at once – a full family!

Other activity includes strange noises, unexplained light anomalies and strange cold spots – sure signs of an active location just waiting to be investigated further.

After an in-depth tour highlighting the history and hauntings of the castle, you will be joined by your medium for the evening who will tell you what they feel are the most active areas and spirits. Armed with this information and scientific and psychic equipment, you will be given the chance to take part in vigils throughout the night, giving you the best chance of finding out first-hand why Clitheroe is regarded as one of the most haunted locations in the area.

Over 18s only!
