Samlesbury Hall is one of the most famously haunted Halls in England. Nearly every ghost book mentions it’s haunting by a white lady, the Ghost of Dorothy Southworth.
The first Hall was built by the D'Ewyas family and situated on the bank of the river Ribble. This was destroyed by Robert the Bruce, after the battle of Bannockburn, when the Scots ransacked and pillaged homes along the banks of the river, from Preston to Clitheroe. The beginnings of the existing Samlesbury Hall started around 1312 by the Southworth family.
The origins of the “White Lady” began in the Seventeenth Century when Lady Dorothy Southworth, a devout Catholic fell in love with a young Protestant. On the night of their intended secret elopement, her brother discovered the plot and killed the young man and his two accomplices. Lady Dorothy the story goes was sent to a convent in France where she went insane and died. Recent discovery of three skeletons near the Hall reinforced the story.
Throughout the 1940's and 1950's the apparition of a lady has appeared in the hall, on the outskirts of the hall where the old moat stood, and on walkways. Locals are convinced that it is Lady Dorothy and the minds of those who have experienced this phenomenon are not to be changed.
