THE HELL-FIRE CAVES Back to Ghost Hunts
*
Join Fright Nights for a very special night at the Hellfire Caves in Buckinghamshire. It promises to be a night of exploration of the paranormal and occult!

The Hellfire caves at West Wycombe are unique. They were excavated on the site of an ancient quarry in the 1750's by Sir Francis Dashwood in order to provide work for unemployed farm workers following a succession of harvest failures. However the caves would later become known for their use by Dashwood's Hellfire Club.

The Monks of Medenham (Dashwood’s group) grew tired of its base on the Thames, so Sir Francis decided to build a unique clandestine meeting place for the club. It is thought that his inspiration for their design came from his travels on the Grand Tour of Europe and into the Ottoman Empire. The caves are approached through an impressive flint forecourt resembling, from a distance, a Gothic church.

A long winding passage leads past various small chambers to the Banqueting Hall and then over the River Styx to the Inner Temple, which is about 300 feet down beneath the church on top of the hill.

The ghosts of the caves are varied considering the age of its construction. One ghost is that of a social climber called Sukie, a chambermaid who worked at the nearby George and Dragon Hotel. One day she went to meet her lover in the caves, dressed in a white wedding dress as he requested. When she arrived it was revealed it was a cruel practical joke that would end in her death. In the caves were waiting a group of local lads who stoned poor Sukie to death. Since her death, Sukie’s ghost is said to haunt the caves and was recently reported as appearing last year!

Other ghosts include members of the Hellfire Club. Sir Paul Whitehead whose ashes and heart were buried above in a private church wanders the caves in the dark and is thought to be the source of poltergeist activity!

Recently Most Haunted visited the caves for an amazing investigation and now its your chance to join Fright Nights for a paranormal investigation of this amazing location.

Fright Nights have hired the Caves for the night for a very exclusive paranormal investigation. The night begins with a special tour of the building detailing real-life experiences and historical information researched by experts. This will set the scene before you are joined by experienced paranormal investigators and mediums to try and experience paranormal activity in one of the most haunted locations in Britain. Full use of Ghost Hunting and Psychic equipment will be provided as well as hot refreshments through the night

I attended your event and had a fantastic night! I appreciate all the organisation you took for the night and experienced some ghostly phenomena. All in all it was a night packed with action, some of which I kept to myself only to be confirmed by the medium and other guests later on. Thank you for a life changing experience, hope to see you on another event soon. J Ibbertson
