Description

Join Fright Nights Berkshire at this historic Mansion House, said to be one of the most haunted locations in Newbury. This will be our only visit this year so don’t miss out!

The building of Shaw House was completed in 1581 by Thomas Dolman, a member of a successful family who had made their fortune from the cloth industry in Newbury.

This location is reputedly haunted by a number of lingering spirits from shadows being seen to screeching screams being heard, what will we find on our investigation at this amazing location?!

Shaw House is famous for its reputation as King Charles I’s headquarters during the Second Battle of Newbury. However recent research has proved that, despite being at the centre of the fighting, the King never went to the house. However other Royals have visited, most notably Elizabeth I.

In the 1720s, it was acquired by the flamboyant James Brydges, the 1st Duke of Chandos. Although it was not the principal residence of the Duke, the family evidently spent some time in the area and the second Duke bought himself a wife at a sale in Newbury. Anne Wells had started her life as a simple Chambermaid.

After the first Duke’s death in 1744 the dowager duchess lived at Shaw House untill her death in 1750. Her step-son sold the property soon afterwards to the Andrews family. It was the childhood home of the historian, James Pettit Andrews.

For many years Shaw House was used as a school and this may have contributed to some of the present day activity, along with major restoration work at the house (opened to the public in 2008) which we know is known to stir up activity.

There have been reports of multiple different paranormal entities in the property. Some of the activity that has been documented includes mysterious balls of strange light, shadow figures and even some disembodied screams that are heard throughout the building.

In the surrounding area, part of the Newbury Bypass is said to be haunted by ghostly figures which have been seen ‘floating’ along the road. Local folklore says that the bypass was built over the site of the First Battle of Newbury of the Civil War and disturbed the mass graves of both Royalist and Parliamentarian soldiers who were killed; and their spirits are now unable to rest.
