Dudley Castle is Back Again in 2023!

Join Fright Nights Worcestershire as they sneak across the border to investigate the Historic Dudley Castle. The motte and bailey construction of Dudley Castle was completed in 1070 by Ansculf de Picquigny (northern France). He was succeeded by the Paganel family during the 12th century who became Lords of Dudley.

We investigated Dudley Castle several years ago and the time has come to renew our visits.  The Dudley Tunnel runs beneath Castle Hill, but not the castle itself.  The castle grounds are now used as a zoo, which we are not allowed to visit, but it is said that there are more ghosts than animals residing there. If you dare to go into the dark and experience what it is like to be a paranormal investigator, then come along and join us.

Dudley Castle, was originally a wooden motte and bailey castle, built soon after the Norman Conquest. It was rebuilt as a stone fortification during the twelfth century but subsequently demolished on the orders of King Henry II. Rebuilding of the castle took place from the second half of the thirteenth century and culminated in the construction of a range of buildings within the fortifications by John Dudley.

The fortifications were deliberately damaged by order of Parliament during the English Civil War and the residential buildings destroyed by fire in 1750. In the nineteenth and early twentieth century, the site was used for fêtes and pageants.

Its location, Castle Hill, is an outcrop of limestone that was extensively quarried during the Industrial Revolution and which now, along with Wren’s Nest Hill, is a scheduled monument of the best surviving remains of the limestone industry in Dudley. It is also classed as a Grade I listed building.
